People are struggling all over the country, thanks to drug abuse. It can easily lead to addiction, and from there, things can really spiral out of control. Drug addiction can cause long-term health problems such as heart failure, and it can lead to the collapse of a person’s professional and personal life.
The problem of drug abuse is not one with a simple solution. Instead, much of it exists due to a series of complex social and economic issues that require specialised personnel to fix.
And to change any system will take time. But until then, there are certain things in place to offer help to drug addicts living in the UK.
Introduction to Drug Use
In recent years the number of people abusing drugs has increased.
This is due to many reasons such as:
- Easier access with new delivery methods popping up every day
- Homelessness on the rise
- The stressful and frightening societal and political situation leads to people trying to forget their troubles.
- The NHS is stretched too thin in the mental health sector to provide much real help resulting in many people attempting to self-medicate with drugs.
- Legal highs are unregulated, and their dangers are unknown.
- A lack of drug education in schools beyond abstinence from all drugs
- Peer pressure
There are drug rehab facilities available across the UK and laws in place to protect those coming forwards for help. At Action Rehab, we provide these services and offer a safe environment for drug addicts to work towards recovery.
Help can be provided anywhere, but there are certain areas where drug abuse is so widespread that it can be incredibly difficult to avoid it.
List of 10 Worst Cities for Drug Abuse
Some cities are worse than others regarding drug abuse. The following list has been compiled using data last updated in June 2021.
The statistics have been made using the number of drug-related crimes that have been committed in relation to the city’s population in order for us to see where has the highest percentage of drug abuse. And as a result, where is the worst place in the UK for drugs.
10: Durham- 86.9%
Durham has a population of 640,000, with 14,975 crimes reported in 2021. However, Durham is lower on the list than in previous years, as the percentage has dropped since last year.
However, while Durham is the lowest on this list for drug-related crimes, it is the second-highest for arson attacks, with 13.4 reports per 1000 people, which is five points above the national average for arson attacks.
9: Northumbria- 89.7%
Northumbria has one of the largest police forces in the UK, and they have recorded over 130,000 crimes in the 2,000-mile area. However, Northumbria also ranks highly for arson attacks and is only one place lower than Durham.
It is, however, been found to have a much lower amount of attacks against people than other places and ranks the lowest on the list for assaults.
8: Kent- 91.4%
Kent is the 10th largest county in England and has a population of nearly 2,000,000 people. Unfortunately, it also ranks quite highly for personal attacks against other people, such as assault.
7: Humberside- 95.2%
Humberside frequently comes out in the median average for crime, with most of its statistics remaining in the middle of the list when compared to the other cities listed here.
6: South Yorkshire- 96.0%
South Yorkshire is one of the least prosperous areas in Western Europe, contributing to its crime rates. As a result, it has been flagged by the European Regional Development Fund for support in the past in order to help development.
5: Merseyside- 96.75%
Merseyside is a newer entry on the list, with the crime rates increasing over the last few years. However, it should be noted that Merseyside ranks lowest for shoplifting on this list when compared to the other locations.
4: West Midlands- 102.9%
The West Midlands is also new to the list but is coming in strong mostly thanks to the inclusion of London in its area.
3: Greater Manchester- 107.9%
This is one of the largest metropolitan areas across the UK, contributing to the crime statistics. It has over 300,000 crimes reported across the area and ranks the highest for theft and burglary out of anywhere on this list.
2: West Yorkshire- 111.6%
Despite only being the 29th largest area, West Yorkshire has the fifth largest population of anywhere in the UK. As a result, West Yorkshire has the third most drug-related crimes out of all of the locations on this list, thanks to its population density.
1: Cleveland- 114.9%
Cleveland is the most dangerous place in the Uk and the highest-ranking on our list. In all of these areas, individual crime statistics never drop below fourth place, allowing it to be named the most dangerous place in the UK.
But even if you live in one of these places, it doesn’t mean that you just have to accept your current situation. You have options available to you, and at Action Rehab, we want to help you.
