Rehab Rhymes – Issue 1

Here is Rehab Rhymes – Issue 1, a hopefully continuing project.

Introduction: Poetry has been said to have a great benefit on alleviating negative mental health issues; especially recovery from any form of addiction. Keeping this is in mind here is a collection of 4 poems. The poems all have the theme of addiction; but from different stages. The Man in the Bottle is from the perspective of someone looking in on another in the midst of their addiction and the issues of peer pressure when trying to break the cycle. Invisible disability is from the perspective of someone accepting their addiction is an illness, and not one they have to be ashamed of or to keep a secret. Breathe is much more positive and the power of breathing and control over your illness. And finally the video is a performance of The House That Smack Built by Sammy Tierney, who is no longer with us. This poem is about how drug addiction affects different people and social groups differently in 1970s Manchester. Poem 1 - The Man in the Bottle He looks tiny inside there Pressing hands against glass, Mouthing words That we cannot hear. He is no genie, he cannt grant three wishes As I think he drank the lot, a routine binge That blocks out life; And he curls up inside false happiness With distorted reflections. Cheap to buy, easy to drink; so easy to fall asleep, Let the sickness pass And start all over again next day. He is a long way down. He needs a lengthy rope to haul himself out, boots With a grip on this sobering world. He must let go of friends Who attempt to pull him back And break his spine In this alcohol soaked chasm. - Barry Wood Poem 2 - Invisible Disability She can’t always say how she feels She hides it with a smile Poetry comes easier Conversation may take awhile For that she’s been misunderstood Until one day she felt that she could Get up here With all you so near Too raise awareness To speak the unspoken Too fix this broken world were living in Where ignorance is not seen as a sin But change can only come If everyone would sucumb Too equality for one and all Stop building this wall of shame People are dying here Because their taught not too talk It becomes a fear Invisible disabilities is what this is about No whispering here Let’s f*cking shout. - Jenny Hesketh Poem 3 - Breathe My breath is my anchor I return there for peace Uninvited emotions Yet together they meet A chest wide disruption An intensifying beat Until a grateful exhale Kicks them out on the street - Timothy Griffiths
