Within a few years, one in ten drug addicts not receive any governmental help to get clean due to budget cuts, according to Public Health England. As we have also seen a rise in deaths due to drug and alcohol abuse, many health specialists in the country are wondering if these issues might be related.
Rehab Admissions Fall as Drug Deaths Rise
The number of clients in rehab facilities has gone down from more than 300,000 in 2014, to just under 280,000 in 2017. This includes all types of treatment, so community services, inpatient treatment and residential rehab.
These findings are in line with news coming out earlier in the year, that the government has cut a sixth of the budget for drug and alcohol abuse intervention out, through a period of four years. This equals an amount over just £100 million. At the same time, the total amount of money granted to the local authorities by Public Health England, has gone up by nearly 20 percent over the last 4 years. However, this is because there has been a shift in responsibilities which means that budget needs to be allocated to other public services. In real-time, there is a smaller budget available compared to the last few years.
The number of people who suffered a drug-related death last year has been at the highest number it has been since the statistics on drug related deaths started, in the early 90’s. In 2017, nearly 4 four thousand people died due to a drug overdoses or poisoning. Nationwide, over a million admissions are related to alcohol abuse or binge drinking.
PHE (Public Health England) reported that Alcohol is the most common risk factor in diseases, deaths and disabilities.
The cuts in social services have led to private clinics being more the more accessible treatment option, and much more effective too. Many clinics have reported a strong increase in referrals and admissions, due to the failings of public services who have cut the budgets consistently.
